The year the earth stood still

We are not going back to normal. Just thought I would get that out the way. The world is in a period of uncertainty and everyone is waiting for the day that things go back to the way they were. That ship has sailed. It's time to move on and chart a new course. Whether you admit it or not, chances are you’re afraid right now. When you’re afraid you crave what is familiar.

What should we fear? God has told us what to fear – Him. This is not the be afraid and run away from me type fear. This is a fear my almighty authority over you and give it reverence type fear. The kind of fear you show your parents as a child not wanting to disobey them. The kind of fear you had as a child when your teachers entered the classroom. God is the ultimate authority and he deserves our respect. We've lost our fear for God.

What does God not want us to fear? Mankind (Deuteronomy 3:22). The LORD’s guide for fear states that we should fear him but not our fellow man (1 Peter 2:17). Why? The LORD created our body and our minds. Thus, the LORD has power over everything we fear. He is the only thing that takes that fear away because it his by his own divine power that this fear even exists in the first place.

Why does he not want us to fear? Anything you give reverence to other than him, you have now granted authority over you. Recall the concept of idols. Not succumbing to fear sounds easier said than done though. How do we not fear? When we trust in the LORD, he can make that fear disappear (Proverbs 3:5-6).

It is often said, “we fear what we don’t understand”. This was no accident. This consciousness came from a fear placed in us by a higher power we can never truly comprehend. It is through this fear though that we gain understanding (Proverbs 1:7) as God makes things known onto you. This may sound confusing and it should, simply because our knowledge is not the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:25).

King Solomon displayed a taste of God’s infinite wisdom in a well-known custody battle (1 Kings 3:16-28). People often ask why God allows certain things to happen. Was Solomon going to terminate the baby? Only God knows. Nonetheless, by the wisdom of God, Solomon knew the unconditional love of the real mother would come out. He knew that perfect love would overcome all fear (1 John 4:18).

What do we do now? The last time things stood still was during the reign of a mighty servant of God by the name of Joshua. During this time the LORD was “cleaning house” of all those who stood against him (Joshua 3:10). Joshua in Hebrew is Yehoshu'a which is the same name given to our Lord Jesus. In other words, Jesus was there the last time the earth stood still. What did Yahweh say to his faithful servant? Fear them not (Joshua 10:8).

Be still.
